Clock spring production

Clock springs

Clock springs efficiently store or generate rotational energy. They are ideal for applications such as airbags, revolving doors and timepieces, and can be customised for long-term performance.

About our clock springs

Clock springs are versatile spring mechanisms that store or generate rotational energy. These springs, usually made of stainless spring steel, are used in various systems such as airbags, revolving doors, clocks and wind-up toys.
In some precision applications, a flat coil spring is chosen, a related spring shape that is more compact and offers a very even force distribution.

There are roughly two main types:

  • A variant in which the coils do not touch each other, which minimises friction.
  • A variant in which the coils do touch each other, as is often the case with wind-up toys.

Clock springs can be produced entirely to order. For a longer service life and optimal performance, they often undergo post-treatment, such as the application of lubricant. When a system ages or becomes less accurate, a clock spring can be replaced or redesigned to restore functionality.

Applications of clock springs

From precision engineering to safety systems

In safety systems such as airbags, clock springs ensure rapid and controlled movement upon activation. In revolving doors and roller shutter systems, they provide the necessary rotational forces for smooth, automatic movements. Clock springs are also essential in medical equipment and mechanical watches for storing and releasing energy in a controlled manner.

De Spiraal supplies clock springs that are custom designed and manufactured to meet the desired force, service life and application. Our clock springs are low-maintenance, compact and reliable.

For anyone who wants to learn more about torsion springs and flat torsion springs, their operation and applications, De Spiraal offers additional technical explanations and advice to help you make the right design choice.

Technical specifications and capabilities

We produce clock springs, also known as spiral springs, for applications in both precision mechanical timepieces and industrial retraction systems. Each spring delivers a predictable torque curve, which is essential in safety systems such as airbags and medical instrumentation. All clock springs are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001.

Free Sizing & Configuration

From our production facility in Haaksbergen, we manufacture clock springs with a strip width of 1 to 60 mm and a strip thickness of 0.07 to 3 mm. We distinguish between two constructions:

  • Open Coils: The coils do not touch each other, minimizing internal friction. Suitable for applications requiring a linear force progression and low wear.
  • Closed Coils: The coils lie against each other. This provides higher energy density in a compact installation space, for example, in retraction mechanisms and return springs.

What else we arrange for you:

  • Winding Direction: We supply clock springs in both left-hand and right-hand wound versions.
  • Optimization: Our engineers advise on the ratio between strip thickness, width, and the number of coils, tailored to the desired rotation angle and lifespan.
  • Lubrication and Finish: For silent operation, we provide the springs with lubricants or a suitable surface treatment.

Material Selection and Environmental Factors

The lifespan of a clock spring depends entirely on the choice of material. Depending on the required corrosion resistance and the number of load cycles, we supply the following grades of spring steel strip:

Type: Carbon Steel
Material Number: C75
Characteristics: Known for its high fatigue limit and the standard for tools and retraction systems.

Type: Stainless Steel Spring Steel
Material Number: 1.4310
Characteristics: Excellent corrosion resistance; ideal for the medical and food industries.

If your material is not listed, or if you are unsure about the right choice for your application? Please contact our team; we'd be happy to help you find a solution.

Co-Engineering: Optimize your clock spring

Are you working with a complex installation space or a specific torque over a certain number of rotations? Our engineers collaborate with you from the initial sketch. Based on strip thickness, width, and total spring length, they calculate the spring characteristics that suit your application. Whether it's for a prototype or series production, we check feasibility and quality before production starts.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide customized clock springs?

Yes, we design clock springs entirely customer-specific, based on the desired torque, rotation angle, lifespan and installation space. Wrapping both left and right.

How many rotations can a clock spring make?

The rotation angle varies by design. Our clock springs can provide various rotations, depending on spring thickness, material and required force.

What is the delivery time for custom clock springs?

The average delivery time is 2 to 4 weeks, depending on complexity and batch size. Prototyping and small series are also possible.

What materials do you use for clock springs?

We produce clock springs made of spring steel or stainless steel (stainless steel 301 or 316), depending on the required wear resistance, corrosion resistance and application.

What is a clock spring and what is it used for?

A clock spring is a coiled spring that provides torsional force when unwinding or unwinding. Clock springs are used for resetting mechanisms, such as retractors, measuring tapes, tools, and watches.
