What is a disc spring?
A disc spring is a disc-shaped spring with a conical form that absorbs force in the axial direction. In its unloaded state, the spring has a characteristic dish shape (cone height), which is gradually compressed under load. The geometry of the spring enables high force absorption with relatively small deflection.
By stacking multiple disc springs (in parallel, in series, or in combined arrangements), spring stacks can be created with a wide range of spring characteristics—from linear to progressive or even degressive behaviour. This makes disc springs particularly suitable for technical applications where precision and customisation are required.
Applications of disc springs
- Mechanical engineering: In mechanical engineering, disc springs are widely used to create preload in bolted joints, bearing housings, and locking mechanisms. Thanks to their compact design and high force capacity, they are ideal for dynamic applications where space is limited. By stacking multiple disc springs, engineers can precisely tailor the spring characteristic to the applied load, for example linear or progressive. Disc springs continue to perform reliably under vibration, thermal expansion, or long-term loading.
- Offshore & Marine: Due to their small installation size and high corrosion resistance, disc springs perform reliably in marine and offshore environments exposed to moisture, salt, and temperature fluctuations. They are used in applications such as engine mountings, hydraulic access systems, and clamping systems. The option to manufacture them in stainless steel or with protective coatings (such as black oxide or phosphating) makes them durable and low-maintenance, essential in offshore environments where reliability is critical.
- Defence & Aerospace: In defence and aerospace, every millimetre and every gram counts—compact and lightweight components are essential. Disc springs offer a unique combination of compact installation, high force generation, and long service life, even under intensive cyclic loading. They are used in fastening systems, braking mechanisms, couplings, and suspension constructions. Thanks to their high reliability and precision, these springs continue to perform in conditions involving extreme temperature differences, vibration, or impact loads.
- Agricultural: Disc springs deliver reliable performance in the agricultural sector, even when exposed to mud, dust, temperature variations, and heavy loads. They are used in adjustments of cabins or seats, engine covers, and protective hoods. Due to their stable preload and compact design, they are perfectly suited for machinery where shocks, vibrations, and heavy loads are part of daily operation.
Why choose a disc spring?
At De Spiraal, we supply disc springs that are fully tailored to your technical requirements and application. Thanks to our in-house engineering department and modern production techniques—such as laser cutting, pressing, stamping, and milling—we manufacture both standard and custom disc springs with short lead times. Our specialists actively advise you on stacking configurations, material selection, and spring characteristics.
For optimal performance under varying conditions, we apply post-treatments where required, such as shot peening, phosphating, black oxide finishing, or oiling. This ensures a durable solution that performs perfectly in your specific application.
Benefits of our disc springs
- Compact force generation: High force output within minimal installation space, thanks to efficient axial operation and smart stacking configurations.
- Flexible spring characteristics: Whether linear, progressive, or degressive behaviour is required, we precisely tailor the spring performance to your design using the optimal combination of material and stacking.
- Accurate and durable performance: Our springs comply with DIN 2092 and DIN 2093 and are precisely calculated based on your load requirements, ideal for dynamic applications with long service life.
